Jesse the Pool Guy
Chapter 6
By Bob Deakin

Jesse the pool guy’s friends and teammates often ask how he maintains such a positive attitude and zest for life. His response is simple: Live every day like it’s your second to last.
“I know the old expression is ‘live every day like it’s your last,’ but that doesn’t make sense,” Jesse explains. “If you live every day like it’s your second-to-last day, you get much more accomplished.”
Planning fosters economy, which is paramount in Jesse’s world.
“If I’ve got that extra day, I can plan for the skydive jump plane to drop me into a body of water where I can swim with dolphins. I’ve done all this in two hours and have my whole last day ahead of me.”
The Reputation Grows With the Biofilm
After Jesse discovered the biofilm breakout at the Cabrera home last week, he made extra visits to resolve the issue. He brushed, vacuumed, and added chemicals to eliminate the nasty intruder.
Most pool guys wouldn’t have gone the extra yard, but that’s Jesse. He used to go about life in a colorless routine, but learned from observing other unhealthy attitudes that he’s better than that.
Frankie Cabrera was so impressed with Jesse’s dedication that he called his employer, Smart Pools, to put in a good word. Kathy the service dispatcher answered with all the positive energy of a dead fish and said she’ll let her boss know.
Thanks Kathy.

Cream of the Crop
Jesse’s healthy approach to life is catching on.
“He’s a good kid with a good attitude,” affirms Bill Blakey, GM of Smart Pools. “If he keeps up what he’s doing, we might ask him back next season.”
Smart Pools customer Joanne Perkins has seen dozens of pool technicians come and go. To her, Jesse is the cream of the crop.
“We feel safe when Jesse comes to take care of our pool. The last guy we had smelled like a skunk and had a bad attitude. The guy before that never brushed his teeth, let alone the pool, and he creeped out our granddaughter.”

Live Every Day Like It’s Your Second to Last
Jesse isn’t concerned with what others think. He takes two college courses pursuing a biology degree, has dinner with his parents every Sunday, and plays a mean game of pickleball with his girlfriend.
He’s learning to play the piano, getting better at mountain climbing, and lasted 2.7 seconds on a bull named Fu Manchu.
“Live every day like it’s your second to last,” he assures with a confident smile, preparing his truck for the next day. He then adds a quote from everyone ever: “Because one day you’ll be right.”
